At Hostal Pension Alemana B and B Hotel, we operate to high standards of performance and advocate socially and
environmentally sustainable business practices. Our aim is to bring a positive benefit to the
societies in which we operate through high quality services, economic growth, environmental
protection, community involvement and employment. In order to adhere to these principles, we
endeavor to:
- Set sound environmental and social objectives and targets, and integrate a process of review and reporting.
- Comply with all applicable environmental laws, statutes, and regulations.
- Continuously improve environmental performance and reduce environmental impact of our activities.
- Create environmental awareness among our employees, customers, suppliers and the community at large.

Current Procedures
At present we currently:
Organization, Reporting and Management
- Have a staff member assigned to managing environmental issues.
- Participate in a local environmental forums and meetings.
- Have environmental planning procedures for any new development to be undertaken at the hotel.
Energy Management
- Engage in achieving a reduction in the energy consumption of our hotel.
- Have effective energy efficient lighting installed in at least 50% of areas.
- Have a policy of purchasing low energy equipment for electrical devices such as fridges, microwaves, cookers.
- Have a member of staff who has been designated to monitor energy performance and set new targets based on results.
- Have performed an initial assessment and changed to energy efficient light bulbs and motion detectors.
- Have measures in place to ensure that our energy supply does not adversely impact on the energy supply for local residents.
- Have trained our housekeepers to identify and report common maintenance problems, such as toilet leaks, etc.
- Have a guest towel reuse/bed linen changing program in place to save water.
- Incorporate energy efficient design into all new construction and refurbishing projects.
- Wash laundry in cold water as much as possible.
- Purchase renewable energy for use on site.
Water Management
- Engage in achieving a reduction in water consumption.
- Have water saving devices fitted to reduce water consumption.
- Have energy saving taps fitted to ensure water is delivered at the temperature it is required.
- Have low flush WCs fitted and water saving devices installed in WCs.
- Have timing devices fitted to the irrigation system to minimize operating times, and have a water saving procedure in place for manual watering.
- Have had the property checked for water leaks.
- Service equipment regularly to ensure it is functioning efficiently.
- Ensure our water supply does not conflict with the water supply for the local community.
- Train employees about water saving practices.
- Have trained employees to be able to detect and repair leaking showers, toilets etc.
- Have implemented water reducing policies e.g. not hosing surfaces to clean them and not watering gardens in the day.
- Have chosen drought resistant native plant species for landscaping.
- Minimize the use of chemicals that end up in wastewater, such as detergent or bleach.
Waste
- Comply with national waste regulations.
- Implement waste reduction targets.
- Collect recyclable items separately (cardboard, plastic, glass, metals, food waste, etc.).
- Avoid using single use condiments (jam, butter, etc) with more packaging, in favor of reusable containers.
- Donate reusable items, such as furniture or food, to charities or employees.
- Provide employees with reusable mugs and eliminate their use of disposable cups.
Purchasing
- Have developed a purchasing policy to try to purchase local and organic or biodegradable products as much as possible.
- Source products from local suppliers wherever possible.
- Choose to work with suppliers who have a code of practice setting out minimum standards and/or an environmental policy.
- Buy products in bulk to minimize packaging.
- Purchase cleaning materials with low environmental impact.
- Collaborate with other local hoteliers to investigate the potential for joint purchasing.
Community Support
- Support and actively contribute to local community development projects.
- Support and actively contribute to conservation or cultural heritage projects.
- Encourage employees to volunteer in the local community.
- Work together with government officials/other hotels/tourism businesses to improve environmental standards in the local area.
- Work with the local community to promote environmental education.
- Respect the surrounding local culture and heritage.
Customer Education
- Encourage guests to buy products that are made locally.
- Provide guests with information regarding to the areas culture and religious characteristics.
- Provide guests with information and encouragement to follow energy saving practices e.g. switching off lights, air conditioning, reusing towels, etc.
- Encourage guests to explore the destination beyond the boundaries of the property.
Employee Training
- Include environmental aspects into employee training, such as how to reduce energy, water and waste.
Future Procedures
In the next five years we aim to:
Organization, Reporting and Management
- Have a written environmental and responsible tourism policy document.
- Publish regular progress reports on environmental issues, employee relations, and the way our business integrates into the community.
Energy Management
- Have installed environmentally friendly flow restrictors / controllers on showerheads and taps.
- Capture and use renewable energy sources on site.
Waste
- Have procedures in place to reduce or reuse waste where possible e.g. providing relevant recycling bins to each department, buying in bulk, buying products with less packaging.
- Have replaced disposable items with reusable ones e.g. refillable soap and shampoo containers, cloth laundry bags, rechargeable batteries, etc.
- Have a hazardous waste policy to safely dispose of hazardous materials, such as batteries and paint.
- Have implemented a battery recycling program for employees and guests.
- Have waste bins provided for guests around the hotel.
Purchasing
- List the use of organic/local and fair trade ingredients on restaurant menus.
- Emphasize the purchasing of products that are certified for their environmental quality.
- Take an active role in influencing and working with suppliers to identify locally produced, fair trade and environmentally friendly products.
Community Support
- Support local schools.
- Showcase local artwork / handicrafts.
Customer Education
- Provide guests with guidance on environmental protection in the destination (e.g. protecting turtle nesting sites, the importance of not wearing sunscreen near coral reefs.
- Provide guests with information about how to reduce, reuse and recycle during their stay.
- Provide guests with information and tips for water saving e.g. turning off taps when brushing teeth, etc.
- Educate guests about how they can make a positive contribution to local biodiversity and conservation efforts.
- Communicate our environmental aims to guests, along with advice to help them reduce their environmental impact and support local conservation and community development projects.
Employee Training
- Have an employee ideas campaign to solicit ideas about how to reduce the hotel's environmental impact.
